What is the relationship between color, sound, and movement? Artist Jaime Derringer continues to explore this question in her collection Chromesthesia: Ascend. In this body of work, Derringer investigates the phenomenon of experiencing colors in response to certain sounds or other stimuli. She employs vibrant and contrasting hues to create a sense of movement, energy, and emotion.Derringer begins with her personal archive of works, both those created on paper and digital paintings. Over the years, Derringer has repeatedly digitally manipulated and distorted these original images using a combination of phone applications, computer software, and AI. Each successive collection or group of works cannibalizes what came before it and is reborn in the wreckage. The final piece is further deconstructed and ultimately reconstructed with a MIDI controller, a device typically used to control or play music, as Derringer turns each knob of the device to distort a section or characteristic of the image. Through this iterative process, she creates a sense of depth and movement within her pieces, as well as a sense of history and evolution.<blockquote>“I see each of these pieces like a phoenix, completely destroyed, but then reborn and ascendant as something new.” </blockquote>For Chromesthesia: Ascend, she relinquished that control to a complex algorithm that mirrors the rhythm of her hands guiding the MIDI controller, destroying the works over and over again to form a type of abstract brutalist composition.Each time the algorithm is run, a new composition is born. The algorithm keeps time and acts like a beat, periodically altering parameters and taking rhythmic snapshots as the composition unfolds. Each piece is composed of a mix of visual parameters of varying rarity which all have a relationship to music and which Derringer names timbre, duration, frequency, and rhythm.

From this grew the brutalism characteristic of former Soviet cityscapes of the artist’s early childhood in Bulgaria. Ultimately stifled by this rigidity and repetition, Velitchkova pushed the algorithm further—breaking it and in the result discovering the form of an opera house, a structure that had become a symbol of freedom to the artist, the promise of losing oneself in art.The overwhelming superstructure of architectural lines breaks the picture plane and seems to go beyond three dimensionality. By avoiding easy categorization, the viewer spends time considering the forms and making sense of the composition. It becomes possible to escape everyday concerns for a moment longer, lost in the almost mathematical task of viewing these geometries. The opera house icon emerges as an antidote to these illusive structures. This central figure is suddenly recognizable as a flat or three dimensional shape. Whether in dense black or highlighted as a central white figure, it is a condensation point, a place for our mind to rest. The images combine the icons of this escape but also serve as a visual guide to achieving it.We are reminded of what art can offer us—mental freedom. Yet ultimately this is an illusion. Just as the opera is a staged fiction with its own rules and schedule, this composition is not real; it is a staged performance specifically created to evoke this reaction.

Escape

In Interference, Phaust foregrounds two scientific discoveries in a search for purity of generative systems—an 18th century German physicist and a 20th century Japanese electronics corporation. Investigating acoustics, Ernst Chladni took a violin bow and drew it against a metal plate lightly covered with sand. When the plate reached resonance the sand would settle on particular nodal lines–leaving what is known as Chladni patterns. These proved to be important in fields as diverse as acoustics and instrument design to wave theory and quantum mechanics. Chladni patterns vary according to a range of factors and can be described with some pleasingly simple equations. Those equations lie at the heart of this collection and perhaps show generative art at its purest: a set of simple equations which give rise to near infinite variation. Phaust drew upon a 1980 invention by the Riso Kagaku Corporation to bring these forms to life–a machine that looks like a photocopier but works like a screen printer. The Risograph uses stencils and vibrant semi-transparent spot color inks to print a single layer of color at a time, producing prints that are vivid, textured and unique thanks to subtle imperfections in the printing process. Interference embraces the quirks of Risograph printing, adopting the semi-transparent colors of Riso inks and exaggerating the mis-alignment found on Risograph prints. Instead of plotting solid bands of color, the collection mimics the texture of Risograph prints through over half a million distinct tiles, each subtly varied in shape and color. This treatment suggests mosaics when viewed up close and harkens back 200 years to sand particles settling along nodal lines on Chladni's plates. Unlike earlier collections such as Pointilla, where the artists had to define much of the forms through code, this is fundamentally a handful of mathematical functions and transformations that create a dramatic variation of composition. Phaust chooses to break the faithful presentation of a physical phenomenon by deviating from standard Chladni patterns — introducing polar coordinates that create a pinching effect to otherwise more rounded forms and an additional distortion that occasionally disturbs these flows. These interventions remind the viewer that this is an unreal depiction, algorithmically generated. This mathematical and conceptual simplicity speaks directly to the beauty of generative systems. Seating Arrangements uses code to create algorithmically generated chairs. The NFT is an interactive digital schematic & rendering, and contains the blueprint used to produce a one-of-a-kind chair. Order a full-sized or tabletop-sized chair, along with the corresponding woodblock print and instruction booklet, at tonic.xyz. The instruction booklet, which is itself an open edition print, has stylized infographic instruction on the front, and a hand-made woodblock print on the back. All chair purchases come with the booklet, or the open edition booklet may be purchased on its own. Woodblock printing uses a single wooden carving (aka “the matrix”) to produce multiple prints that each have their own subtle variation in texture and registration—in this way, the matrix is the “true” source of new work. In Luke’s algorithmic process, a single body of code produces many unique matrices which represent related but distinct perspectives on a single idea. A systems based approach to creation leaves space for things to emerge that the artist had not conceived. In its best form, it also enables the creation of artwork with complete unity of concept, system, and manifestation as they become one and the same. In Seating Arrangements, Shannon highlights both the matrix and its product, the print. The algorithm generates a digital file that serves as the blueprint. These unique instructions are then executed by a CNC machine to carve out the distinct sections of the chair. The carved wooden slab is inked, simultaneously creating the print and painting the final chair. Finally these pieces are assembled to create a free standing chair entirely from the matrix—without any hardware. The print becomes a record of an intermediate event, and the matrix is shared as the final assembled sculptural piece of furniture. In this series, the generative algorithm does more than ornament the final structure: it is central to the very essence of the chair. The artist defined 220 short, straight segments of wood that can be included or excluded by the algorithm and can intersect with up to 13 other segments. The repeating geometry of the design allows the viewer to see the positive form of the chair in the included segments and the negative form of the chair in the absence of those that are not. The range of possibilities for this algorithm is 2^220, or 1,684,996,666,696,914,987,166,688,442,938,726,917,102,321,526,408,785,780,068,975,640,576 unique chairs. The incomprehensible multitude of potential chairs elevates one of Shannon’s core questions in the work: what is a chair? Many of the potential outcomes are not sittable, but does that exclude it from being a chair if it still registers as one visually? If you were to overlap all of the chairs, there would be no single element that is shared by all. The viewer is denied an understanding of the platonic form of a chair, as there is no one common feature that can be distilled as the essence of chair within this series. The removed segments insert a new dimension to the relationship between body, consciousness, and object. So much of what we come into contact with on a daily basis is designed to recede in our minds— consider “pain free” UI/UX or an office chair. We constantly interact with engineered systems that do not assert themselves. Their recession can mean forgetting that they exist at all, and forgetting that they are designed for their own purposes outside of our wants and needs. Seating Arrangements

Strands of Solitude is a meditation on connection and isolation in the digital age. Through a series of intricate and highly detailed digital compositions, William Mapan delves into the ways in which social media and our increasing reliance on technology has both connected and disconnected us from one another. The proliferation of social media and other digital platforms, Mapan's art highlights the ways in which we can still feel isolated and disconnected from those around us. His use of saturation, experimentation with density and negative space, and flow fields serves to emphasize not only this sense of disconnection, but more importantly remind the viewer that we are still part of a larger whole. As the viewer is drawn into the works, it is Mapan’s hope that we can recognize that we may be more similar than we are different. Despite this underlying sense of isolation, Mapan's work also celebrates the ways in which we are able to connect and find common ground through our shared experiences and connections. By bringing together a variety of different elements and influences in his art, Mapan creates a sense of unity and connection that is palpable to the viewer. As we navigate the complexities of the digital age, Mapan's art serves as a reminder of the ways in which we are all connected, even in the midst of seeming disconnection.
